Instant Pot Feijoada is a traditional Brazilian black bean and pork stew that is the ultimate comfort food! Serve it with smoked sausage and rice for a delicious and hearty dinner!
Although the weather has started to get warmer, we’ve still had some chillier days in Chicago and the need for comfort food is still there! Especially when that comfort food is so easy to make! This Instant Pot Feijoada is a recipe that my mom has made since I was born, and it’s been a favorite of mine for just as long. It’s a dinner recipe the whole family loves!
I was born in São Paulo, and while my family was living there, my mom learned how to make some of the best Brazilian dishes! Brazilian Feijoada is commonly referred to as national dish of Brazil, and for good reason! It’s a traditional brazilian stew that is so comforting, hearty, and just makes you feel good! They’re the most delicious black beans you’ll ever have!
What do you need to make Feijoada:
1 pound of black beans
3 or 4 strips of thick-cut bacon
1 large yellow or white onion
3 or 4 cloves of garlic
1 smoked pork shoulder, pork trimmings or pig’s ears
Salt and pepper and red pepper flakes to taste
How do you make Feijoada in the Instant Pot?
If you don’t have a pressure cooker or Instant Pot, you can still make this traditional feijoada recipe in a slow cooker, but the Instant Pot makes it so much quicker! And as a mom of a toddler, quick meals are my go-to! Here’s how you make it:
Brown the bacon: Put the Instant Pot browning or sauté mode, and add the bacon to the pot. Cook bacon for 3-4 minutes and add the onion and garlic. Cook for another two minutes before adding the smoked ham hock or pork shoulder.
Next add the beans and water: From there, add the dried beans, salt and 5 cups water and place the lid on the Instant Pot. Lock the lid and cook on high pressure for 40 minutes. Then let the pressure come down naturally, about 20 minutes.
Finally, serve! Carefully remove the lid on the pressure cooker Taste the beans for seasoning. Spoon over rice on a serving plate, garnished with parsley!
What should I serve with Feijoada?
This is such a hearty black bean stew, not much else needs to accompany the meal! However, my family always served Feijoada over white rice with some spicy smoked pork sausages or paio sausage.
Chopped, fried Collard greens or orange slices are also often served alongside the stew.
Pair it with an asparagus salad to complete the meal!
How long does feijoada last in the fridge?
Feijoada is one of those dishes that actually tastes better the next day! The flavors have time to develop even more and the brazilian black bean stew tastes even more incredible! If stored in an airtight container, the stew will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week, or in the freezer for up to three months.
