Key Ingredients for this Recipe

Imitation Crab Meat

Imitation crab meat is significantly cheaper than real crab, making it budget-friendly, especially for large gatherings. It’s also widely available and sold year-round in most grocery stores, unlike fresh crab, which may be seasonal or harder to find. It provides a uniform texture and flavor, which can be important for recipes like this dip. Additionally, Imitation crab meat comes pre-cooked, requiring no additional preparation. This saves time in the kitchen!

Horseradish

Horseradish introduces a subtle spicy and tangy heat that complements the richness of the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise in this savory dip.

Ketchup

Ketchup is combined with the Horseradish to create a cocktail sauce, which makes this crab rangoon dip so unique!

Cheese

I used an Italian cheese blend of parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese and romano. You can find this in the dairy aisle at the grocery store pre-blended, or you could shred your own.

Cream Cheese

A cream cheese base creates a rich, slightly tangy base that gives the dip structure. It keeps the dip extra creamy and easy to scoop without breaking your chips and crackers

Worcestershire sauce

Adding worcestershire sauce to this dip is an easy way to add deep flavor to uncooked sauces

Mayonnaise

The tangy flavor, and the creamy texture of mayo is the perfect addition to this cheesy crab rangoon dip.

Sour Cream

Sour cream keeps things light and tangy, and brings balance to the dip.

Lemon Juice

Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a bright freshness to this dip! You can use bottled lemon juice if fresh isn’t available

Other Ingredients

Green onions- chopped scallions or green onions are optional, but make a great garnish on top of the dip!

Garlic – fresh garlic is best, you may substitute 1/8 of a teaspoon of garlic powder if fresh isn’t available.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Substitute Gruyere cheese for the Italian Cheese blend. It melts beautifully and has a nutty, slightly sweet flavor that pairs well with crab’s natural sweetness.
  • Swap Cream Cheese for Cottage Cheese. For a lighter version, you can use cottage cheese instead of cream. Put it in a food processor to create a smooth consistency before adding it to the dip.

Step By Step Instructions To Make This Creamy Crab Dip

step by step process of making imitation crab dip

Mix together cream cheese, sour cream and mayo with a hand mixer until light and fluffy.

Combine Horseradish and ketchup to create a cocktail sauce. Add it to the cream cheese mixture and mix well. Add lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and garlic and continue to mix.

Add the imitation crab meat to the same bowl. Stir to combine but don’t overmix so the dip will still have nice chunks of crab right in it.

Add 1/2 of the cheese and gently fold until combined.

Spoon dip from the mixing bowl into a baking dish and smooth the dip out to the edges of the dish. Top with remaining cheese.

Bake at 375 for 25 minutes, covering the first 20 minutes with foil. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes and bake until bubbly and the cheese on top has melted.

How to Make this Dip Ahead of Time

Make ahead: This dip can be made up to 24 hours in advance, making it ideal for parties.

Prepare the dip completely
Follow the recipe as written, mixing everything together except the final cheese garnish if you want it to look freshly made.

Cover tightly
Transfer the dip to an airtight container or cover the serving bowl tightly with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface to prevent drying out.

Refrigerate
Store the dip in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour and up to 24 hours before serving. This resting time allows the flavors to meld and deepen. If the dip feels a little firm after chilling, let it sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes before serving.

Stir before serving
Right before serving, give the dip a gentle stir to re-incorporate everything and restore its creamy texture.

Finish fresh
Sprinkle the remaining Italian cheese blend (and extra green onions if you like) on top just before serving for the best texture and presentation..

FAQ and Expert Tips

Room Temperature Ingredients: softened cream cheese for best results

Don’t Overmix: Fold the crab meat gently to keep its texture intact.

Turn the broiler on at the end to get the cheese to turn golden brown.  Watch carefully so it doesn’t burn.

Keep It Warm: Use a warming dish or slow cooker for serving, as crab dip tastes best warm.
