Make game day sweet with football brownies! Easy to prepare and fun to decorate, these treats are a must for any party.

When it comes to game day desserts, I’m a firm believer in keeping things fun, festive, and stress-free—especially when there are already a dozen savory dishes fighting for oven space. That’s exactly why these football brownies have become one of my go-to Super Bowl treats year after year. They’re rich, fudgy, in fun football shapes, and decorated with simple white buttercream laces that instantly scream football season.

Even better? They start with a boxed brownie mix, which means you get bakery-style results without spending all day in the kitchen. This sweet treat is a win-win on and off the field.

Why We Love This Recipe

Honestly, this classic treat is the cutest way to cure those mid-game sweet cravings. It’s quick, festive, and guaranteed to disappear before halftime. I love that it turns a basic boxed mix into something that feels custom and special, without requiring advanced baking skills.

Plus, these football brownies are perfect for kids and adults alike. They’re nostalgic, playful, and just the right amount of indulgent—exactly what Super Bowl party desserts should be.

Tools Needed for this Recipe

  • Ateco 5255 6-Piece Stainless Steel Football Cutter Set or a sharp knife
  • Piping bag or ziplock bag

Why We Use Each Ingredient

  • Boxed brownie mix
This is the ultimate baker’s hack ingredient. Boxed mixes are consistent, reliable, and give you that perfectly fudgy texture everyone loves—especially when you’re feeding a crowd.  You can use egg-free brownies or gluten-free alternatives if necessary for those guests with dietary sensitivities.
  • Eggs (from the box instructions)
Eggs provide structure and richness, helping the brownies hold their shape once we cut them into footballs.
  • Oil (from the box instructions)
Oil keeps the brownies moist and tender, which is especially important when cutting out shapes—you don’t want crumbly edges here.
  • Water (from the box instructions)
Water activates the mix and brings everything together smoothly without adding heaviness.
  • White buttercream frosting
This is where the football magic happens. You can use yourfavorite frosting here, too! The bright white color pops against the dark brownie, making the laces instantly recognizable and extra festive.
  • Football cookie cutter
The Ateco football cutter creates clean, uniform shapes, giving these brownies a polished, party-ready look without any guesswork.

How to Make Football Brownies

First, preheat your oven according to the brownie box instructions. Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving a bit of overhang on the sides. This small step makes removing the brownies so much easier later.

Next, in a large bowl, prepare the brownie batter exactly as directed on the box. Once everything is fully combined, pour the batter into your prepared pan and spread it evenly.

Bake in the preheated oven according to the package directions. Then—and this part is important—let the brownies cool completely. I know it’s tempting to rush, but cutting warm brownies will lead to messy edges and broken footballs.

Once cooled, lift the brownies out of the pan using the parchment paper. Using the football cutter, cut out as many football shapes as possible, pressing straight down for clean edges.

Finally, transfer white buttercream frosting to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip (or use a zip-top bag with the corner snipped). Pipe the football lace across the top of each brownie football. Keep it simple—just a straight line with short cross-stitches—and suddenly you’ve got the cutest game-day dessert on the table.

Storage Instructions

  • Room Temperature: Store football brownies in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Refrigerator: For longer storage, keep them refrigerated for up to 5 days. Let them come to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
  • Freezer: Undecorated brownies can be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw completely, then cut and decorate before serving.

These brownies started as a last-minute Super Bowl addition one year when I realized I had zero time for an elaborate dessert. I grabbed a box of brownies, a football cutter I already owned, and a tube of white frosting—and somehow, they became the most commented-on dish at the party.

Now, they’re a tradition. Every year, someone asks, “Are you making the football brownies again?” And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
