Move over avocado toast, tomato toast is the new craze! This heirloom tomato toast with poached egg and a spicy garlic spread will be the first thing you crave now when you wake up!
Avocado toast has been hot item on every menu in Chicago for what feels like the last 5 years. Don’t get me wrong, I love avocado, but it was getting a little tired. Does anyone else feel this way? I’m switching things up with an amazing spicy garlic spread that I discovered recently at Trader Joes.
Holy yumminess. This stuff is really good. I am crazy about garlic. If you’ve seen the meme circulating the internet that says “Don’t ever let a recipe tell you how much garlic to put in. You measure that with your heart,” that’s me in a nutshell. If you’ve tried my roasted heirloom carrots with spicy garlic yogurt sauce, you know this is true.
This spread is light and fluffy. It’s a creamy, and spreads like mayo or cream cheese. It’s garlicky—very garlicky, but at the same time not overpowering. I don’t think there’s any raw garlic in the spread, because you don’t get that “punch” of garlic flavor. It’s like a smooth wave of garlic that takes over your entire mouth. You must try it on this heirloom tomato toast with poached egg!
If you’re the kind of person that dreads getting up in the morning, this heirloom tomato toast with poached egg is going to change your world. The only way it would get better is if you had someone else to make it for you! There’s nothing too difficult about making it either! If you follow my fool-proof method to poaching eggs below, you can have this on your table in just 5 minutes.
What’s an heirloom tomato?
An heirloom is a variety that has been passed down through several generations of a family because of it’s valued characteristics. There are four different categories of heirloom tomatoes
Commercial Heirlooms: Open-pollinated varieties introduced before 1940, or tomato varieties more than 50 years in circulation.
Family Heirlooms: Seeds that have been passed down for several generations through a family.
Created Heirlooms: Crossing two known parents (either two heirlooms or an heirloom and a hybrid) and dehybridizing the resulting seeds for how ever many years/generations it takes to eliminate the undesirable characteristics and stabilize the desired characteristics, perhaps as many as 8 years or more.
Mystery Heirlooms: Varieties that are a product of natural cross-pollination of other heirloom varieties.
Whatever the variety, this gorgeous heirloom tomato makes an incredible toast!

How do I make Heirloom Tomato Toast with Poached Egg?
Start by toasting a crusty piece of bread. I love the parmesan garlic bread from Costco
Next spread Trader Joe’s Garlic spread on the toast
Slice an heirloom tomato and place on top of the garlic spread
Place a poached egg on top
Season with salt and pepper and hot sauce if desired.
Enjoy!
