Looking for a guilt-free snack? This healthy buffalo chicken dip is light yet indulgent, perfect for game days.
If you love classic buffalo chicken dip but don’t love how heavy it can feel afterward, this healthy buffalo chicken dip is about to become your new go-to. It’s creamy, tangy, and spicy—yet lightened up with protein-packed swaps that still deliver that indulgent, game-day-worthy vibe.
Whether I’m hosting friends, pulling together a last-minute appetizer, or just craving something cozy to snack on while watching football, this recipe always hits the spot. Best of all, no one ever guesses it’s a healthier version—and that’s my favorite kind of win.
Key Ingredients You’ll Need for this Healthier Buffalo Chicken Dip

- Greek Yogurt – This replaces traditional cream cheese and sour cream or ranch dressing in regular buffalo chicken dip, giving us that creamy texture while adding protein and keeping things lighter. I always reach for full-fat or 2% for the best flavor and consistency. You can use non-fat or full-fat Greek yogurt. If you use nonfat greek yogurt, your dip will be slightly thinner.
- Cottage Cheese – Trust me on this one. Once mixed in, it melts right into the dip, adding even more creaminess and a subtle tang—plus extra protein without heaviness.
- Buffalo Sauce – The heart of the recipe. It brings heat, acidity, and that unmistakable buffalo flavor that makes this dip irresistible.
- Ranch Seasoning (Optional) – This adds a little herby depth and classic buffalo-ranch flavor. I love including it when I want the dip to taste extra nostalgic.
- Coarse Ground Pepper – A simple seasoning that enhances the spice and balances the richness of the cheese.
- Shredded Chicken – This makes the dip hearty and satisfying. Rotisserie chicken works beautifully here and keeps prep simple for this easy buffalo chicken dip. This dip is a great way to use up leftover chicken!
- Cheddar Cheese – Freshly shredded cheddar melts better and gives the dip its signature gooey finish. Dividing it ensures cheesy goodness throughout and on top. You could also use pre-shredded cheese from your grocery store.
- Black Pepper – While the buffalo sauce brings bold, upfront heat, black pepper adds a more subtle, earthy warmth that rounds everything out. It helps layer the spice rather than letting the dip feel one-note or overly sharp, balancing the tanginess of the yogurt and the richness of the cheese. That gentle background heat is what makes each bite feel well-seasoned instead of just spicy. If you want it punchier, you can always add a pinch more—but even a small amount makes a noticeable difference in depth and balance.
- Green Onions – Totally optional, but they add a pop of freshness and color that makes the finished dip feel extra inviting.
How to Make Healthy Buffalo Dip
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- In a large bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, buffalo sauce, ranch seasoning, and pepper, stirring until smooth and fully blended.

- Next, fold in the shredded chicken and 1 cup of the cheddar cheese, mixing until everything is evenly coated.
- Spread the mixture into a 9–10 inch cast iron skillet or oven-safe baking dish, smoothing it out evenly.

- Top with the remaining ½ cup cheddar cheese, because a bubbly, cheesy top is non-negotiable.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the dip is bubbling around the edges and the cheese is perfectly melted.
- Finish by sprinkling green onions on top and drizzling with a little extra buffalo sauce, if desired. Serve warm with your favorite dippers: fresh veggies, baguette slices, or tortilla chips.

Notes
You can use non-fat or full fat Greek yogurt. If you use non-fat, your dip will be slightly thinner.
Do not use normal yogurt or it’ll be way too thin.
I recommend using full fat cottage cheese for the best texture but low fat will work too.
Freshly shredded cheese melts nicer than pre-shredded cheese.
Using shredded rotisserie chicken is what I used. If you use unseasoned shredded chicken for this you may need to add some salt. Taste the dip before you add it to the cast iron and make sure it’s salted enough.
Leave out the ranch seasoning, if desired. If you do, add a bit of salt, to taste.
You can use an 8×8 baking dish instead of a cast iron, if preferred.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheat individual portions in the microwave, covered.
This dip will not freeze.
