Large saute pan

Ground chicken – A lean, mild protein that soaks up all the bold flavors beautifully while keeping things light.  You could also substitute ground turkey

Sesame oil – Adds that unmistakable nutty, toasty depth that gives this dish its signature flavor.

Water chestnuts – For that irresistible crunch! They add texture that contrasts perfectly with the tender turkey.

Garlic – Essential for building a savory, aromatic base.

Fresh ginger – Adds warmth, brightness, and that signature aromatic “zing” that makes these wraps taste restaurant-quality. This is one of those ingredients we used constantly in culinary school to layer flavor from the very beginning.

Green onions & scallions – Add freshness and a mild bite, plus a pop of color.

Mini bell peppers – Bring sweetness and vibrant color (you know I love a colorful spread!).

Shredded carrot – Adds subtle sweetness and texture while rounding out the veggie mix.

The Sauce (Where the Magic Happens)

Water – Helps loosen the sauce so it coats everything evenly.

Soy sauce (both additions) – Brings salty umami depth and ties everything together.

Oyster sauce – Adds richness and a slightly sweet, savory complexity.

Hoisin sauce – A thick, slightly sweet sauce that gives that classic “takeout-style” flavor.

Rice wine vinegar – Brightens everything with a touch of acidity.

Sweet chili sauce – Adds a hint of sweetness with a mild kick.

Sriracha – For heat (adjust to your spice preference!)

For Serving

  • Bibb lettuce or butter lettuce – Crisp, refreshing, and the perfect edible “cup.”
  • Peanuts (optional) – Add crunch and a rich, nutty finish.
  • Green onion (optional)
  • Peanut Sauce
  • Sesame seeds
  • Red Pepper Flakes for a little kick
  • Fresh cilantro

How to Make Chinese Chicken Lettuce Wraps

  1. Make the sauce:
In a small bowl, whisk together water, reduced sodium soy sauce, rice vinegar, sweet chili sauce, green onions, sriracha, and hoisin. Set aside.
  2. Cook the turkey:
Heat 2 tablespoons sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  3. Add the veggies:
Add remaining sesame oil, then stir in water chestnuts, bell peppers, carrots, garlic, and scallions. Sauté for 3–5 minutes until slightly softened but still crisp.
  4. Add the sauce:
Pour in soy sauce, oyster sauce, and rice vinegar, followed by your prepared sauce mixture. Stir well to coat everything evenly.
  5. Serve:
Spoon the chicken filling into lettuce cups and top with reserved scallions and peanuts if desired.

Entertaining Tip

If you’re serving these for a group, turn it into a DIY lettuce wrap bar. Arrange the filling in a large bowl and surround it with lettuce leaves, chopped peanuts, extra sriracha, and even a few extra toppings like shredded cabbage or crispy wonton strips.

It instantly becomes interactive—and from a food styling perspective (yes, I can’t help myself), it looks so beautiful and abundant on the table.

These had great flavor! (I was hungry and too impatient to let the liquid cook off but you could probably get away with leaving out the water). Thanks for an easy, delicious recipe!
