Blood Orange Whiskey Sour

Blood orange season is coming to a close, so take advantage with a cocktail! Blood orange whiskey sours are perfect for staying home!

It’s been a long time in quarantine, and I’m not sure when it’s going to end. To pass the time at home, I’m enjoying trying new cocktails, and this blood orange whiskey sour is my new favorite!

What are blood oranges?

Blood oranges are a naturally occurring mutation of the sweet oranges that everyone is familiar with. They’re essentially a cross between an orange and a raspberry! The fruit is similar in taste and texture to a regular orange, but unlike traditional oranges, blood oranges aren’t available year-round! That’s because they need specific weather conditions to develop their red color.

While blood oranges are mainly produced in Italy, and only grow through the months of December to May, the winter and spring months.

The flavor is stronger and the aroma is more intense than a normal orange. This fruit has a distinct, sweet flavor with a hint of raspberry.

How do you make a blood orange whiskey sour?

This blood orange whiskey sour is a twist on a traditional sour cocktail. Traditional sours cocktails include liquor, citrus juice, and sweetener. Pretty easy to remember, right? 

For this blood orange whiskey sour, we’re adding a little bit of blood orange juice, and some lemon juice!

What you need:

1-½ ounce Bulleit Whiskey
1 ounce Blood Orange Juice
½ ounces Lemon Juice
½ ounces Simple Syrup
1 dash Angostura Bitters

Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, put the lid on, and shake well! Pour into a cocktail glass and garnish with a fresh blood orange slice.
