Easy Basketball Fruit Pizza with Sugar Cookie Crust

Celebrate March Madness with a fun Basketball Fruit Pizza. This dessert is festive, simple, and sure to please any crowd.

If there’s one dessert that never makes it back home from a party, it’s this basketball sugar cookie fruit pizza. I’ve made this for March Madness watch parties, youth basketball banquets, and even last-minute Super Bowl spreads when I needed something festive fast. Every single time, people hover, ask how you made it, and then quietly go back for “just one more slice.”

The best part? It starts with store-bought sugar cookie dough—because sometimes convenience is the real MVP.

Why We Love This Recipe

This basketball sugar cookie pizza checks all the boxes. It’s festive, easy to assemble, kid-friendly, and perfect for sports parties. Plus, it’s customizable—you can swap fruits, change shapes, or adapt it for different team colors.

I also love that it’s one of those desserts that feels nostalgic. It reminds me of school parties and team celebrations where everyone gathered around the dessert table first. It’s playful, approachable, and just plain fun.  A total crowd pleaser!

This chewy sugar cookie gives us a sturdy, sweet base without extra prep. It bakes evenly, slices cleanly, and holds up beautifully under frosting and fruit. Let the crust cool before you spread on the cream cheese frosting, otherwise the frosting will be a melted mess!

Mandarin Oranges

These bring bright color and juicy sweetness that mimic the look of a basketball while keeping the dessert fresh.  While I think that oranges are the best fruits for this dessert, if you’re not a fan, some other fruit options are mango or nectarines.  You’ll need 5 or 6 mandarin oranges for this recipe. Peel and slice them into 1/4″ circles width-wise.

Cream Cheese

Smooth cream cheese frosting adds that signature tangy richness that balances the sweetness of the cookie crust and fruit. If you are not a fan, you can use American Buttercream or my healthy fruit dip instead.

Powdered Sugar

Sweetens the frosting while keeping it silky smooth—no grit here.

Vanilla Extract

Enhances all the flavors and adds warmth to the frostingon this fruit pizza recipe.

First, roll out your store-bought sugar cookie dough on a Silpat or parchment-lined baking sheet. You could also use a parchment paper lined pizza pan.

Shape it into a large circle to resemble a basketball, then bake according to the package directions until just golden brown on the edges.

Once baked, let the cookie crust cool completely. This step is key—spreading frosting on a warm cookie will cause it to melt and slide right off (learned that the hard way).

While the cookie cools, combine the cream cheese, softened butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Using a hand electric mixer, beat on high speed for about 5 minutes until the frosting is light, fluffy, and completely smooth.

Next, using an offset spatula, gently spread the cream cheese frosting over the cooled cookie crust, leaving a small border around the edge if you like a cleaner look.

Now for the fun part. Arrange the blueberries in curved lines to mimic the stitching on a basketball. Then, place the mandarin orange slices in the open spaces, slightly overlapping them to fully cover the frosting and create that classic basketball look.

Step back, admire your work, and try not to snack too much before serving.

Entertaining Tip

Slice the fruit pizza insto triangular slices before guests arrive and serve it on a large cutting board or platter. This makes it easy for people to grab a slice during halftime or between games—and keeps the design intact longer than letting guests cut it themselves.

For extra impact, add a small chalkboard sign or mini basketball props around the platter for a themed dessert table moment.

Storage Instructions

Store any leftover fruit pizza cookie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The cookie will soften slightly as it chills, but the flavors stay delicious. For best texture, enjoy within the first 24 hours.
