Key Ingredients for this Recipe
Banana Bread
Banana bread gives this bread pudding its unique flavor! You may use store bought or homemade banana bread. Use day-old bread if you have it. If you have fresh bread, can cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and dry out the banana bread cubes in the oven at 300 degrees F for 20 minutes.
Eggs
Large eggs are used to create a custard for this bread pudding. Eggs act as a thickener in the custard sauce in this sweet treat.
Heavy Cream
Heavy cream brings a rich and delicious flavor to the simple recipe.
Brown Sugar
Brown sugar is used as a sweetener in the custard sauce. You may use light or dark brown sugar. I love the molasses flavor that the brown sugar brings to this delicious dessert. You can substitute white sugar if brown sugar isn’t available.
Kahlua
There’s nothing like a cup of coffee and a slice of banana bread, so Kahlua was the perfect addition to the sauce and the bread pudding. Kahlua is a rum liquor that contains sugar and arabica coffee. If you don’t have Kahlua, you may substitute regular rum.
Vanilla Extract
A little vanilla extract acts like salt does on the savory side: It enhances all the other flavors in this warm dessert!
Milk
I like using a combination of milk and heavy cream for the custard sauce so that the banana bread bread pudding isn’t too rich.
Walnuts
Chopped walnuts are added to the bread pudding to add a beautiful crunch to each bite. If you’re not a fan of walnuts, pecans are a great substitute.
Additional ingredients
Some other optional add-ins include:
- Chocolate chips
- Banana slices
- butterscotch chips

We just made this recipe but left the Kahlua out of the bread pudding and only used it in the sauce. (Did you realize that you included it in the ingredient lists but left it out of the bread pudding instructions?) It turned out great! My only comment might be to soak the bread cubes in a bowl rather than the baking dish, so you could give them a good stir after about 15 minutes. We had some of the custard settled on the bottom and some of the cubes toward the top a bit more dry. Didn’t take away from it at all, though. It was fantastic.
